How does a chemical peel work?

A chemical peel works by exfoliating the accumulated superficial dead cells on the surface of your skin and hastening the regeneration of new cells. The result is a faster turnover of skin cells - giving you a youthful, radiant look.

Conditions a chemical peel can help

The peel helps repair and reduce pimple breakouts, control oil, soften wrinkles, improve scarring, decrease pigmentation, pore size and age spots, and provide an even, smoother skin texture.

In our clinic we use the enhanced Jessner's peel with light-to-medium depth formulas containing only natural acids - lactic, citric and salicylic - plus kojic acid and hydroquinone to lighten pigments by bleaching and inhibiting pigment production.

The procedure

Each full-face peel takes about 10 minutes. After cleansing, the doctor preps your skin with a smoothening toner - you may feel a brief tingle - then applies the peel in a dabbing or sweeping action. A mild stinging quickly passes, and the doctor decides how many layers to apply by carefully observing your skin's response.

You can resume normal activities immediately; any redness fades within an hour or so. Expect some temporary flaking, redness and dryness about 3 days after a superficial peel, lasting a few days to a week - none of which should prevent work or routine activities. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and use a daily sunblock with adequate UVA and UVB protection.

A series of about 5 peels at monthly intervals may be needed to achieve the desired results. We can also treat the neck, chest, back, arms and legs.
